Douglas Fisher is the Professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University a role he has held for nearly a quarter of a century. In 2007, he co-founded Health Sciences High and Middle College, an award-winning open-enrolment public school in San Diego, where he currently sits as the Dean of Faculty Affairs.
Over the course of almost four decades in education, Douglas’s work has been dedicated to the knowledge and skills of caring teachers and school leaders needed to help students attain their goals and aspirations. He has worked variously as a teacher, as a language development specialist and as an administrator for public schools and other educational organisations. As a credentialed English teacher in his homestate of California, Professor Fisher’s focus is on creating classrooms and schools that promote student development of literacy and critical thinking from the onset of their education.
Doug has served for 8 years as the Director of Professional Development for the City Heights Collaborative in San Diego, where he successfully oversaw dramatic increases in student achievement in some of the urban schools under his jurisdiction. He has served on the board of directors for multiple literacy associations, including the California Reading Association, the Literacy Research Association, and the International Reading Association.
Professor Fisher’s stellar work for American literacy and teacher education has long been recognized by his state, his country and internationally. He is the recipient of the International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award, the Farmer Award for excellence in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English, as well as a Christa McAuliffe Award for excellence in teacher education. He is a member of the California Reading hall of Fame, and his books on the subject of promoting literacy regularly feature among best-selling lists around the world.
