Visible Thinking Routines and Metacognition

  • - Metacognition is less difficult to apply than we think.
  • - Making thinking visible is essential to lifelong learning.
  • - Students are capable of anything if we are consistent and plan things according to their needs.

Session Description

Metacognition is a term we are all familiar with, for our students, it is also a form of self-regulation, involving self-awareness, critical analysis skills, and the ability to problem-solve.

For students, having metacognitive skills means that they can recognise their cognitive abilities, direct their learning, evaluate their performance, understand what caused their successes or failures, and learn new strategies. It can also help them learn how to revise.

During this session, participants will get a deeper understanding of the importance of metacognition and how it is connected to the use of Visible thinking routines, I will try to provide practical hands-on examples of how to adapt certain routines to different levels and settings so teachers can realize they plan an important role in developing lifelong learners.
