Transforming Education to Better Meet the Needs of Students and Society

  • - Existing models of education do not serve students (who want to be happy and successful) or society (which needs people to manage their mental health, avoid addiction, be creative, have healthy relationships, and learn the soft skills to flourish at work).
  • - Alongside their core subjects, we also need to teach students self-awareness, emotional intelligence, how to be happy, have healthy relationships, avoid addiction, and develop the communication and leadership skills to succeed in life.
  • - Exams need to be re-thought because they cause so much stress and that destroys the love for learning in a child. Knowledge is easily accessible now so the need to memorise it is not needed now. We need to educate children to develop a love for learning because that is something that is going to be needed life-long. The jobs they will do have not been invented yet.

Session Description

When asked what they want from life, most young people say they want to be happy, and successful. Education does little to help them be happy, and as far as success is concerned research suggests that soft skills and emotional intelligence, rather than school grades are better predictors of success. In a world where knowledge is on-demand, perhaps we need to move away from old models of examination which cause so much stress, to a system where we spark the love for learning in a child, and in addition to their subjects we also teach them self-awareness, help them be emotionally intelligent, mentally healthy, have happier relationships, avoid addiction, and develop soft skills to flourish at work.
