Three Myths of Inspection: The flawed search for quality

  • - We make a lot of effort to ensure accountability and quality in schools but just too much of it is not very intelligent.
  • - Behind this lie three myths - the myth of observation, the myth of measurement, and data and the myth of accountability.
  • - There is an urgent case for a more nuanced and balanced scorecard model.

Session Description

The session will explore what’s gone wrong in England with our approach to inspection and its place in ensuring accountability.

It will explore the flawed nature of our current understanding of accountability and relate this to an understanding of the weaknesses of observation and the misuse of data and measurement as a means of assuring quality in schools.

It will explore by way of contrast one example of the development of a more nuanced balanced scorecard approach built on a more reliable and comprehensive evidence base, and also consider the use of collaborative enquiry as a part of this.
