Lessons Learned from Maths Lessons

  • - Teaching mathematics as a set of algorithms denies children opportunities to develop as mathematicians.
  • - All pupils in mainstream secondary schools are good at mathematics. (I have things to say about this).
  • - In mathematics, pupils need ownership, understanding, problem-solving skills, modelling skills, and good communication skills.

Session Description

We want to shift mathematics teaching away from the algorithmic … “First you do this, then you do that”. In the session, I will try to show what that looks like by drawing on some of our experiences which are detailed in our book. In our Socratic dialogues, we point up the difficulties. In key areas of the mathematics curriculum, we discuss what we see as better approaches, approaches which we and our trainees have successfully implemented.
