I’ve Got It!: When young learners self-evaluate

  • - When young learners self-evaluate, they develop a habit of metacognitive thinking and advocacy that empowers them to own their learning journeys from the very start.
  • - Metacognitive strategies engage learners in deliberately practising self-monitoring, self-reflection, and self-evaluation.
  • - A variety of instructional strategies allow us to partner with learners and scaffold their self-evaluation both in the moment and at significant junctures of learning as well as across modes, including speaking, listening, drawing/writing, and reading.

Session Description

From preschool to primary grades, every learner experiences moments when they excitedly say, “I’ve got it!” How do we capitalize on those moments so that even young children can be metacognitive learners who own their learning journeys? We’ll share ways we engage our learners in self-monitoring, self-reflection, and self-evaluation through a variety of strategies, including thinking routines, class chats, emojis, drawing and writing journals, touch-lights, exemplars, student-created displays, portfolios, and so much more. Come see and hear what happens when these incredible young learners self-evaluate.
