Gaps Between Male and Female Students: In educational outcomes

  • - Male-female differences in qualification choice and attainment
  • - There are marked differences even at an early age, and these make a difference in later progression
  • - We should continue to be concerned about the drivers of these differences and their personal and societal impacts

Session Description

A longstanding concern in education is differences in attainment and subject choice between male and female students. This study used publicly available data on students in England to evaluate the state of these ‘gaps’ over recent years, at various stages of education from school entry to university graduation. With some qualifications showing marked differences in male and female participation, we need to continue to examine closely what drives these differences and the impact they have on life chances.
