From Climate Anxiety to Eco-Agency: Tech-driven hope in global challenges

  • - The scale of the global issues we face from issues such as climate change and natural disasters, although vital for our pupils to know, can seem overwhelming, sometimes resulting in climate change anxiety.
  • - However, it is possible to teach pupils about these challenges in a way that promotes empowerment, using technologies such as GIS and remote sensing to enable pupils to be active agents in the face of these challenges, becoming classroom decision-makers and problem-solvers regarding unfolding events across the planet.
  • - In this session, we will explore how I have done just that with my pupils, looking at examples from wildfires in Alaska to volcanic eruptions in Semeru, Indonesia, to mapping local urban tree planting, to mirror the work done by the authorities in the ‘real world’, showing them how they could choose to be part of the change for good in their future careers.

Session Description

In a world of increasing global challenges, more than ever we need to teach our pupils how to be agents of change in the face of these challenges. In this session, you will discover how my pupils use cutting-edge technologies, such as GIS and remote sensing in our geography classroom to explore unfolding events in near real-time. Hear how they gather the geospatial data they need to make informed decisions about management and response to actual real-time events. Watch them discover how it is possible to be agentic and be part of the change for good in our planet.
