Embracing a New Equity-Based Approach in Education

  • - Address our cultural biases and barriers within the classroom.
  • - Remove extra barriers to learning experienced by children outside schools.
  • - Adopt an equity mindset involving four key principles.

Session Description

Equity in Education sets out a new approach to schooling which strives to make classrooms genuinely inclusive while addressing some of the key impediments to learning outside the school gates.

In his latest book, Lee Elliot Major, argues that we need to ditch deficit mindsets that have dogged education for decades if we are to have any chance of tackling persistent school achievement divides. This includes doing more to celebrate the achievements of the working classes, removing a host of social class biases and barriers in the classroom and replacing unhelpful labels such as ‘disadvantaged pupils’ with ‘under-resourced pupils’. In this talk, Lee provides practical strategies for teachers and teacher leaders and the national policies that would help to level the playing field in education.
