Descriptosaurus: Teaching grammar as part of the writing process

  • - How to teach students to write, clear, precise and complete sentences using the writing process approach.
  • - How to revise a draft text for syntactic accuracy and fluency.
  • - Adopting a recursive approach to teaching grammar.

Session Description

Based on Descriptosaurus Grammar Companion: Ages 9-12 – a flexible grammar toolkit based on current and past research about the effective strategies for writing instruction (investigation, imitation, combining and expansion). It includes guidelines, scaffolds and models, and by showing a clear progression route to the acquisition and consolidation of increasingly more complex grammar tools, provides teachers and students with a road map that makes learning about sentence construction and revision visible. It is designed to support student writers, according to their current stage of development, not age-related targets and expectations; to provide a resource that can be used not only to teach a new grammar tool but to return to a tool previously studied but which either a group or an individual student needs to revisit to consolidate their knowledge and usage or correct any misconceptions.
