All About Autism: The practical guides for primary and secondary educators

  • - "Autism + Environment = Outcomes" is a quote by Dr Luke Beardon, therefore, starting with the environment makes classrooms more accessible for learning.
  • - Dual coding of information reduces cognitive load, therefore, using visuals and structure to support communication enables more successful learning for autistic pupils.
  • - Autistic people have different and often more intense responses to sensory stimulation, therefore, understanding their sensory responses can enable us to support our students to be in the best state for learning.

Session Description

The presenter will share top tips from her books that are the easiest and most effective adaptations that support autistic pupils in any school. These include adapting to the environment, communication tools and sensory regulation support that create a calm and accessible classroom for many autistic young people. These also have the benefit of supporting other children whose needs may not yet identified. Teachers want to teach and these books show how that can be made possible, even in busy classrooms.
