Professor Thomas Guskey is one of the world’s most successful educational authors. An internationally renowned researcher and educational policy expert, Thomas has written 25 award-winning books and over 250 critically important research chapters, articles and papers on student measurement, evaluation, assessment, and professional learning. He has a global influence, with his work helping teachers and school leaders around the world effectively use quality educational research to support the needs of their students. Thomas entered the world of education as a middle years teacher. He earned his PhD in Educational Measurement and Evaluation from the University of Chicago in 1979. He then served as an administrator in public schools in Chicago before becoming the first director of the newly opened national research Centre for the Improvement of Teaching and Learning. He took up the role of Professor of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation at the University of Kentucky, a role he held for nearly 30 years whilst also serving as a Visiting Professor and Scholar at universities across US, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. He currently sits as Professor Emeritus in the University of Kentucky’s College of Education.
Thomas has written 25 award-winning books and over 250 critically important research chapters, articles and papers on student measurement, evaluation, assessment, and professional learning. His work has featured in leading research journals that include the American Educational Research Journal, Review of Educational Research, and the Educational Researcher. Thomas has also served on the Policy Research Team of the National Commission on Teaching & America’s future, as well as the task force for developing the National Standards for Professional Development in his homeland of America.
Dr. Guskey’s ground-breaking contributions to pedagogy in North America have been duly recognised. He has been named a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association, as well as being awarded their prestigious Relating Research to Practice Award. He has also been awarded the Distinguished Contributions to the Field Award by Learning Forward, The Millman Award by the Consortium for Research on Educational Assessment and Teaching Effectiveness, the Distinguished Achievement Award by the Association of Educational Publishers, and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
